“There’s something about north,” he said, “something that sets it apart from all other directions. A person who is heading north is not making any mistake, in my opinion.”
“That’s the way I look at it,” said Stuart. “I rather expect that from now on I shall be traveling north until the end of my days.”
– E. B. White, Stuart Little
My family hails from southern USA, and I live in the dry center of the Iberian Peninsula, but for me there’s always been “something about north”. It’s not just the cold or the mountains or the magical Northern Lights. North stands for true direction; thus, in Spanish, someone who has “lost the north” has lost their way.
The One who said he is the Way, the Truth and the Life embodies my true north. In the august cadence of the King James Bible, “My soul followeth hard after Him” (Psalm 63:8).
I do rather expect I shall be traveling north until the end of my days.
